Valentine’s Day is this week! We like to keep celebrations pretty low-key around here (no one needs the pressure of great expectations, right?), but I do like to find simple ways to shower a little extra love on my family.
These DIY pop-up heart Valentine’s Day cards are just that kind of a project. They’re simple, fun, and use supplies you probably already have on hand. Can I get a high-five for NOT having to take an extra trip to the store?
Craft them with your kids to give away, or make them yourself for the kids to enjoy. Either way, they’re sure to bring a smile to the receiver.

How to Make a Pop-Up Heart Valentine’s Day Card
Supplies Needed
- White cardstock or blank greeting cards
- Colored paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Black pen or marker
- Optional: Stickers, glitter, or washi tape for extra decoration
Instructions
1. Create the Card Base
Fold a piece of white cardstock in half to create your card. If using a pre-made blank card, you’re already set!
2. Cut Out Your Hearts
Cut several hearts out of colored paper. To make the pop-up effect, cut out at least five hearts of the same size. The more you stack, the fuller the pop-up will look.
3. Assemble the Pop-Up Heart
- Fold each heart in half down the middle.
- Apply glue to one half of a heart and attach it to another folded heart.
- Keep layering and gluing until you have a 3D effect.
- Glue the finished pop-up heart onto the center of the card’s fold.
4. Decorate Your Card
Once you have the basic pop-up heart, you have lots of options for how to finish your decorations. Here are three easy options:
- Add small paper hearts around the pop-up to fill the page with love!

- Draw a flower stem and leaves to turn your pop-up heart into a blooming flower.

- Create a hot air balloon by adding a small paper basket and drawing ropes.

4. Write a message and SHARE THE LOVE
These pop-up heart cards are perfect for parents, teachers, or kids to make for classmates and family. Pair them with a homemade Valentine’s treat or a cute handwritten note for an extra thoughtful touch!
