The weather is warming up, and that means we’re taking our learning outside! Hooray for sunshine!

Last week I set up a little outdoor alphabet game for my preschooler to practice identifying letters and making letter sounds. It’s super simple, and we had a great time playing and learning together on a Friday afternoon.

Hooray for March! My five-year-old (who is a boy after my own heart) declared last night at bedtime that spring starts on March first, so it’s spring now. I hated to disappoint him by explaining that technically spring is still a few weeks away. March is certainly coming in like a lion, though. We’re due for a big snowstorm this weekend.

Ahoy! Does anyone else ever question why we encourage our children to learn about and act like pirates? If you think about it, they go around hunting for buried treasure (usually other people’s) and making people walk the plank. Not exactly upstanding citizens. Oh well, I just choose gloss over the plundering part and focus on exploring the seven seas and finding “lost” treasure. We’ll worry about character education later on this one, I suppose.

Anyhow, as long as your moral dilemma about pirates doesn’t go any deeper than mine, I have another great pirate activity for your preschoolers today.

Summer is winding down, and while my kids (4 & 2) are too young to be heading back to school full time, we are gearing up for mommy school. We got super lazy over the summer and our school routine got a little lost in the midst of all the morning walks to the park, afternoon trips to splash pads, and play dates with friends. I’m okay with that because I think play is an important form of learning for little ones, but I’m looking forward to getting things running a little more predictably again.

I really like predictable.

My boys LOVE the alphabet! Little Man is starting to get interested in the idea of reading and while he can’t do it on his own yet, he loves to talk about the letters of the alphabet and what words he know that start with each letter. It’s become a fun game, and we’ve been gathering alphabet books from the library to give us some variety.

One of the fun things about alphabet books (aside from all the alliteration, which my English teacher heart LOVES) is that all the different books use different words that start with the various letters, so it’s fun to compare and contrast.

It’s Monday, and I’m back with another fun preschool idea for you to explore with your little ones. Mommy school has been a little lax around here during the summer, but we’ve still been including lots of learning activities into our playtime. This week, I’m starting another more formally themed week. We’re going to focus on the Olympics, and I’m excited to introduce Little Man to some new sports. He’s all about anything that involves competition, so I think he’ll get really into it.

The Rainbow Road: a life-sized learning game for preschoolers

Rainbow Road: A life-size learning preschool game…this game is a fun, rainbow-themed giant board game to help young kids play, move, and practice alphabet skills. So much fun!Rainbow Road: A life-size learning game for preschoolers...this game is a fun, rainbow-themed giant board game to help preschoolers play, move, and practice alphabet skills. So much fun! After the success I had with the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom alphabet game I created a few weeks ago for Little Man (age 3), I got inspired to make up some more games for him. We’ve been learning about rainbows for Mommy School lately, so I thought it would be fun to make a life-size board game for us to play together….

Little Man LOVES board games. I didn’t know that until I bought him Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders for Christmas and unwittingly created a monster.
