One of my VERY favorite parts of being a mom is reading aloud to my kids. Just about every night, I read a chapter or two of a novel to my older two boys (ages 6 and 9) at bedtime. I take turns snuggling them in their beds, and we explore far off places and have wild adventures in the pages of the books we read together.

These Christmas picture books for kids are the best of the best…stories your family will want to read again and again! We got our first real snow this week, and Black Friday ads are everywhere…so it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas from where I’m standing.

We’re holding out on putting up the Christmas tree until after Thanksgiving, but we’ve been listening to Jingle Bells on repeat and we broke out the Christmas picture books last week. I’m pretty sure I came out of the womb reading a book…which worked out well because I was born into a family where bookcases decorated every room of the house. As a child, I spent countless hours poring over the pages of gorgeous books. So many worlds waited to be discovered every time I opened the cover of a new book. My version of heaven.

When I became a mom six years ago, I knew I had a lot to learn. I knew I would be teaching my kids the alphabet, counting, and the difference between blue and green. I did not, however, realize that being the mom of three boys would require me to get an honorary PhD in paleontology and construction. Seriously, I had NO idea how much time I would spend reading about dinosaurs and trucks.

16 Not-Too-Scary Halloween Books Kids Will Love

Confession: I don’t really like Halloween. It’s my least favorite holiday of the year. I just don’t understand the fascination some people have for scary, undead, and/or gory things. I have far too vivid an imagination to be able to deal with anything frightening; even as an adult, I still get nightmares if I watch scary movies….

One of the things that I looked forward to most about becoming a mom was being able to share all my favorite books with my kids. I have fond memories of my mom introducing me to so many wonderful stories, and I wanted to share that magic with my own kids as well.

One evening when I was pregnant, I may or may not have bought six children’s books at once during a shopping adventure with my sister, which may or may not have resulted in my husband suggesting that we might need to establish a book budget. Whoops. 🙂 I was just so excited to share the joy of reading with my future son….

I love this quote from C.S. Lewis. I have always loved picture books. During my years teaching middle school, I would regularly pull a picture book off my shelf and read it to my students to illustrate the use of imagery, voice, onomatopoeia, or whatever else we happened to be working on in our writing….

I love books. When I taught middle school, I spent most of the money I received each year for classroom supplies on books for my classroom library. I used this library to help my students find books they liked, and I would allow them to check them out from me to take home and read.

I would tell my students, “There are more than 16 million books in the Library of Congress. You can’t hate ALL of them. If you think you don’t like to read, you’ve just been reading the wrong books.”…
