Do your kids have weekly spelling lists for school? Memorizing word lists isn’t exactly exciting for most kids, and who can blame them? After a full day of school, who wants to sit still (again!) and be drilled in spelling words? Not my kids. They’d rather be off jumping on the trampoline or building amazing Lego creations.
Still, learning to spell is important (yes, we need spelling even in the era of spell check). Learning to spell makes kids better readers, better writers, and helps them understand the how language works as a whole.
So how can we avoid the homework power struggles and make homework more enjoyable for our kids? Add in a dose of PLAY, of course!
When you add movement, creativity, and a little laughter, spelling practice turns into something kids can actually enjoy. It doesn’t have to be a stressful battle every day.

12 Fun & Creative Ways to Practice Spelling Words at Home
1. Boogie Board Spelling
If you have an LCD writing tablet, use it for spelling practice! You quiz the words, your child writes the answer, then spells it aloud. For some reason, my kids think writing on a tablet is WAY more fun than using normal paper, plus erasing with a click makes practice quick and fun.
2. Playdough Words
Kids can write their words on flattened playdough (this is the BEST homemade recipe) with a pencil or toothpick—or roll “playdough snakes” and form each letter. Hands-on = more memorable!
3. Wiki Stix Creations
Bend and twist Wiki Stix (or pipe cleaners) into letters to build each spelling word. This one is especially fun for tactile learners.
4. Rainbow Writing
Using markers, crayons, or colored pencils, trace each word in all the colors of the rainbow. The repetition builds memory, and the rainbow effect looks really cool when it’s done!
5. Spelling Scavenger Hunt
Hide spelling words around the house (on cards or sticky notes). As your child finds each word, they read it, spell it aloud, and hand it in. Pro Tip: Let your child make the cards first—more practice for them, less work for you!
6. Spelling Connect Four or Tic-Tac-Toe
Play a classic game—but with a spelling twist. Draw a tic-tac-toe or Connect Four grid on a piece of paper. Instead of using X’s and O’s, have each player choose a different color pen/pencil and write a spelling word in the box of their choice to mark their spot.
7. Spelling Hopscotch
Have a wiggle worm who just needs to move? Draw a sidewalk chalk grid outside, and write a letter in each square. Call out a word, and invite your child to hop to each letter in the right order while spelling the word aloud.
8. Snack Time Spelling
Combine spelling with snack time! Break out the Cheerios, Goldfish, or pretzels and let your child “build” their spelling words. When they finish, they can eat their words (hee, hee).
9. Switch Roles: Kid as Teacher
Flip the script and let your child quiz you. Kids love being the teacher—and they’ll practice reading, spelling, and correcting you. (Ham it up by “forgetting” a few words!)
10. Secret Agent Writing (a.k.a. Ghost Words)
Write the words with a white crayon, then have your child color over them with markers or watercolor to reveal the “secret” spelling. Make sure they spell each word aloud as they uncover it. Or, have them copy each word onto a list on another sheet of paper.
11. Create Silly Sentences
Challenge your child to use each spelling word in a silly sentence. The wackier, the better! (“The elephant wore roller skates to ballet class.”) Extra challenge: Write out the word and see if you can build a sentence using each letter of the word in order. For example, one of my son’s spelling words this week is “toward.” To remember it, we made up the following sentence: Two Orange Walruses Angrily Rode Donkeys.
Mnemonic devices like this one are a great strategy for words your child is having a particularly hard time remembering. I bet you still remember some of the ones you learned in school: HOMES…ROY G. BIV…Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally?
12. Hangman
Go old-school with Hangman! It’s a classic way to sneak in spelling practice—just use your child’s spelling list as the word bank! Each guess reinforces letter recognition and word patterns while keeping the game fun and engaging.
