16 Christmas LEGO Challenges to Inspire Kids This Holiday Season
Looking for fun and easy ways to keep your kids entertained this holiday season? These Christmas LEGO challenges are the perfect solution!
Once the kids are home for Christmas break, I’m going to take a wild guess that you could use some ideas to keep them occupied. There is A LOT of excitement leading up to Christmas, and it can be hard for kids to come up with ways to pass the time until Christmas morning.
But if you’re like me, you also have a million things to do, and you can’t spend all your time making sugar cookies and building gingerbread houses. Somtimes you need a no-prep activity that kids can do on their own for awhile while you get stuff done.
That’s what I’m offering you today!
These Christmas LEGO challenges are fun, simple, and the perfect way to keep kids entertained while fostering imaginative play. So, grab a bucket of bricks, gather around the tree, and let the building begin!
To make these challenges as hands-off as possible for you, and as hands-ON as possible for your kids, I’ve created printable LEGO Challenge Cards for each of the prompts below. You can download them at the bottom of this post!
Christmas LEGO Building Challenges
1. Design an Ornament to Hang on the Tree
Design your own LEGO Christmas ornament! Make it small enough to hang on the tree or sturdy enough to stand as a decoration on a shelf. Bonus points if it has a hook or string to hang!
2. Reimagine Santa’s Sleigh
Oh no! Santa’s sleigh has broken down. Can you design and build a new mode of transportation for Santa? It could be a rocket ship, a hot air balloon, a magical snowmobile…or anything else you can imagine. The possibilities are endless!
3. Make a Christmas Countdown
How many days are left until Christmas? Use LEGO to make a countdown calendar for the holidays! Perhaps it could be a path that you could move a minifig along. Or, you could build tower of red and white bricks and remove one each day leading up to Christmas. What other ideas can you think of?
4. Build an Iconic Christmas Symbol
When you think of Christmas, what do you picture in your mind? Presents, candy canes, a shining star, a snowflake? Choose your favorite Christmas symbol, and see how creative you can be in building it. Can your family and friends guess what your creation is meant to be?
5. Create a Gingerbread House
Building a gingerbread house is a classic holiday activity, but what about a LEGO version? Design your dream gingerbread house, complete with candy-colored bricks for gumdrops, peppermint swirls, and whatever other sweet treats you can dream up!
Pro Tip: Use tan or brown bricks for the walls and colorful pieces for candy decorations.
6. Construct a Snowman
Do you want to build a snowman? (I couldn’t resist.) Try building a frosty friend out of LEGO. Add details like a carrot nose, a scarf, buttons, and even a LEGO top hat! If you’re feeling extra creative, you could even build an entire snow family.
Extra challenge: Can you make your snowman “come to life” with moving parts or a funny pose?
7. Design a Christmas Tree
How tall can you build a LEGO Christmas tree? Build a tall and proud tree with ornaments, a star at the top, and even presents underneath if you like! Bonus points if you can make their tree “light up” using LEGO light bricks or colorful translucent pieces.
8. Build a Christmas Nativity Scene
Build a nativity scene, complete with a stable, manger, and figurines for Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and the animals, too! Use your favorite minifigures to represent the characters.
9. Create the North Pole
Start with a simple pole in the middle of a base plate, then build the Santa’s North Pole around it as you imagine it to be. Make sure to include Santa’s workshop! Add minifigures as elves for extra fun.
10. Become an Toy Inventor
Design and build a new toy that Santa could deliver to good little girls and boys for Christmas Day. What kind of toy would you enjoy? Bring it to life for other kids! Bonus points if you share your creation with a friend or sibling and play together!
11. Build a Christmas Village
Work together as a family to create an entire Christmas village. Assign each person a building or feature, such as a bakery full of Christmas sweets, a toy store, an ice-skating rink, or a cozy cottage. Connect them all into a festive winter scene!
Tip: Add cotton balls or white fabric to represent snow, and use minifigures to populate your village.
12. Make a Functional & Festive Gift Box
Build a LEGO gift box that can actually open and close. Bonus points if you can hide a tiny “present” inside, like a minifigure or small accessory.
13. Create a Christmas Parade Float
Imagine a holiday parade coming through your living room. Build a colorful Christmas parade float and then have a family parade to celebrate everyone’s creativity! Your float could feature Santa, a snowman, or even a LEGO Christmas tree.
Tip: Use wheels or rolling pieces to make it move!
14. Build a snowflake
Build your very own LEGO snowflake! Start with a center piece, add six symmetrical branches, and decorate it with colorful or icy white and blue bricks. Make it as tiny or as giant as you want—just don’t forget to make it unique!
15. Construct your own Polar Express Train
All aboard the Polar Express! Build your own Christmas train complete with an engine, passenger cars, and room for presents. Bonus points for details like snowy decorations, a bell, or even a tiny conductor to bring it to life!
Tip: Wheels without tires are perfect for trains!
16. Create a Reindeer to Help Pull Santa’s Sleigh
Create your own LEGO reindeer! Build the body, antlers, and a red nose, then give your reindeer a name. You can even add a scarf or a sleigh for extra fun!
