Winter can be rough when you have energetic kids that are bouncing off the walls on cold days. Even if you believe in dressing them up warmly and sending them outside, they likely won’t be out there all day (especially if they’re young and have a hard time keeping their mittens on). That means you have a LOT of hours of the day to fill…and sometimes everybody gets a little stir crazy.
Can you relate?
As a mom of three wild boys, I’ve found it’s critical to everyone’s sanity to make sure that my boys get their bodies moving regularly, especially in winter when we’re often inside more. This animal movement game is one of the many tools I keep in my mommy toolbelt as an easy win for active play and creative fun.
One of my favorite things about these animal movement cards is how versatile they are. We use them indoors in the cold months, but the game works equally well in the backyard (or at the park) in summer.
The best part? There’s no setup. And no explaining complicated rules. Just kids moving their bodies and pretending to be animals, which, let’s be honest, they love anyway.

How to Play:
This is a truly low-prep activity. Here’s all you need to do:
- Print and cut out the animal movement cards.
- Shuffle the deck and place it face down.
- Have kids take turns drawing a card.
- Everyone acts out the animal movement shown on the card.
That’s it! The goal is simple: move your body like the animal and have fun doing it!

Here’s a Peek at the Movements
There are twelve animal action cards in this printable set, including the following fun motions:
- Walk like a bear – Stomp and lumber like a big, fuzzy bear
- Scuttle like a crab – Move sideways with quick little steps
- Jump like a frog – Crouch down and leap forward
- Balance like a flamingo – Stand on one leg and hold your balance
- Stomp like an elephant – Take big, heavy steps
- Flap like a bird – Stretch your arms wide and fly away
- Gallop like a horse – Run with high knees and big strides
- Waddle like a penguin – Shuffle side to side, keeping your arms stiff at your sides
- Run like a cheetah – Run as fast as you can (with safe boundaries!)
- Swing like a monkey – Reach, sway, and pretend to swing
- Swim like a fish – Glide through the room or yard. Can you make a fishy face?
- Walk like a seal – Wiggle and scoot forward, using your arms only
Tip: If you want your cards to last through lots of enthusiastic play, laminating them is a great idea. (In my opinion, every mom needs a basic sturdy laminator!)

Ways to Use the Animal Movement Cards
Indoor Movement (Perfect for Winter)
When it’s too cold, rainy, or dark to play outside, these cards are a lifesaver. Clear a little space in the living room and let kids burn energy while staying warm and cozy.
Outdoor Summer Play
Take the cards outside! Spread them around the yard, playground, or park and let kids run to a card, act it out, and then move on to the next one.
Animal Freeze Dance
Play music and have kids move like the animal on the card. Pause the music and freeze! Draw a new card and start again.
Classroom or Homeschool Brain Breaks
Teachers and homeschool parents love these cards for quick movement breaks that help kids refocus and reset.
Parties & Playdates
These cards are an easy, no-pressure activity that works for mixed ages and doesn’t require explaining rules over and over.
