I’ll be honest. I’m not usually one for fancy gift wrapping. I love it, I admire it, but as the mom of three young boys…I don’t have time for it. I do almost all the wrapping of gifts around our house, so I usually buy a pack of the sticker-style gift tags and call it good.

But this year I got inspired to do something a little different.

You see, my kids LOVE coloring…especially my four-year-old who makes cards for just about everyone he meets these days. So I thought it would be fun to make some Christmas gift tags that my kids could color and then put on gifts they are giving this year.

They’re a perfect finishing touch to gifts for grandparents, teachers, friends…just about anyone!

It’s a super simple way to personalize your gift giving this year…and it has the added bonus of being a meaningful, low-prep Christmas activity to keep your little elves occupied this December.

Sound good?

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. There are 4 different designs to choose from, with 8 tags total per page. Lots of options!
  2. I designed the shape of the tags with only straight lines specifically to make them easier to cut out for little hands (and for parents, too!)
  3. You’ll want to print them on cardstock if possible to make them sturdier.
  4. As much fun as it is to color these, you can also use them just as they are…classy black and white minimalist gift tags. Enjoy them however they work best for you!

Tip: Have the kids color them BEFORE you cut them out, that way any coloring outside the lines will get cut off anyway! Having a bigger paper gives kids more to hold onto as they try to stabilize the paper while coloring. If you have really young kids, you could rough cut them first (so they don’t just scribble across the whole page–although on second thought that could be fun) and then trim after coloring.

Once your tags are all colorful, punch a hole near the top and then loop some ribbon (I love using red & white baker’s twine) through the hole. Attach tag to your intended gift, and give away!

One last note: While your kids’ coloring job might not be as tidy as you would like, the recipient of the gift will undoubtedly love the personal touch of a hand-colored card…even if it looks a little wonky. If you’re like me, it might require you to sit on your hands and let the kids do it their way. But this is one of those times where their creativity and expression of love is more important than a picture perfect wrapping job.

Happy wrapping!
