A few years ago, I was looking for a way to motivate my kids to take a walk with me on a beautiful fall day, but my boys were not excited about it. They needed a little extra nudge to get outside that day, so I came up with an idea—what if we turned our neighborhood walk into a scavenger hunt, searching for all the fun Halloween decorations popping up on everyone’s lawns?
We grabbed our coats, printed off a list, and set out on our little adventure. As we walked through the neighborhood, we excitedly pointed out witches’ hats, pumpkins, and spooky ghosts, checking each one off our list as we went. It was such a fun way to turn an ordinary walk into something special. Since then, we’ve made this scavenger hunt a fall tradition. Sometimes we walk, other times we pile into the car and drive around town to spot even more decorations.

Full disclosure: My idea of decorating for Halloween is throwing a few pumpkins on the front porch and maybe adding some bats…but only if I’m feeling reeeally ambitious. Some people, though, go ALL out! And that’s what’s great about this activity. I don’t have to deck out my own yard…we can enjoy other people’s enthusiasm!
Halloween Decoration Scavenger Hunt
How it works:
The idea is simple: print off the scavenger hunt list (available below), head outside, and start hunting for classic Halloween decorations. Check off each item you find along the way. Your goal is to spot as many of these Halloween items as possible.
That’s it! It’s a great way to stretch those legs, enjoy some fresh air, and get in the Halloween spirit!
More ideas for fun:
- Instead of going for a walk, go for a drive around town and play Halloween music in the car while you hunt.
- Give out an award to the house with the best decorations! It can be just a simple note, a certificate, or a small treat/prize. You choose!
- Once you have found all the items on the list, take everyone out for a Halloween treat (or go home for your celebratory dessert). Dirt cups or homemade root beer would be super fun, but if you need something quick and easy…grab some pumpkin cookies from the store and call it good!
If you have NO time:
The great thing about this activity is that it’s MEANT to be done while you’re on the go. If you have errands to run, or have to drive kids to activities today, bring along your scavenger hunt to make the car time worthwhile!
Keep an eye out for all the items as you drive around…no need to make a special trip!
