How to Make Lego Cupcakes (With Edible Lego Bricks!)
These Lego cupcakes are perfect for a kid’s birthday party…and they’re easy to make! This step-by-step tutorial will teach you everything you need to know to feel like a kitchen rockstar!

With a house full of Lego-loving boys, it’s no surprise that I’ve thrown several Lego-themed birthday parties over the years. My guide to our original Lego party is still one of my most popular posts, though I’m a fan of the Lego Star Wars party we pulled off the next year, too.
The truth is, Lego is just a fantastic theme for a birthday party. Kids love them, and there is SO much you can do with them in a party setting without spending a ton of money.
Fo example…making these Lego cupcakes!
I originally made these cupcakes for my oldest son’s 6th birthday (way back in 2018), but I recreated them last week for my middle son’s birthday. I’ve gotten LOTS of questions about them over the years, and while I gave some details about how to make them in this post, I decided it was time to write a full tutorial.
So, here it is!

How to Make Lego Cupcakes
What you’ll need:
- 24 cupcakes: Cake mix, eggs, oil/butter, cupcake papers
- Frosting: butter, powdered sugar, cream/milk, vanilla extract
- Candy melts in red, yellow, & blue
- Silicone Lego mold
- Sprinkles
Step 1: Create Edible Lego Bricks
Because you have to chill the Lego bricks, I recommend starting with this step. You can make these ahead of time and store them in the fridge or on the counter (if it’s cool enough) for a few days if needed.
Tips on choosing candy melts: You can buy colored candy melts, or you can buy white candy melts and color them yourself. If you color them yourself, make sure to use gel food coloring. Water based colors will make the white chocolate seize (i.e. – become grainy and unusable). If you haven’t worked with candy melts before, I highly recommend just buying the colors you want. I got mine at Michaels because they had the most vibrant colors I could find. While you’re there, buy this Lego brick silicone mold.

- Melt the candy melts: Choose one color to start with (I started with yellow). Follow the package instructions to melt the candy discs. I poured some in a microwave-safe bowl (you will only need 4-6 oz. of each color) and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then I took it out, stirred it, and put it back in for 30 seconds again. I repeated this until the chocolate was completely melted and smooth.
Warning: Do NOT overheat. If you just blast it in the microwave for two minute on full power, you might end up with scorched pockets of candy. Be patient, and be sure to stir well each time you check the candy melts. It will probably take 3-4 times, depending on your microwave. - Pour into Molds: Carefully pour the colored chocolate into the Lego brick silicone mold. I recommend putting the melted chocolate in a piping bag (or just a ziptop bag with the corner snipped) to limit the mess. Tap the mold gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles. The more you tap, the more you’ll get all the air bubbles out and have good, clean lines on your Lego bricks.
A note about Lego brick molds: I originally bought these Lego molds from Amazon to use. However, when they arrived, I realized that the Lego brick molds were much bigger than I anticipated, about 1 inch by 2 inches. I decided to keep the molds and use them for making crayons, and then bought this true-to-size Lego brick silicone mold from Michaels that was perfect for the cupcakes. - Chill: Place the filled mold in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely set.
- Remove from Molds: Gently pop the edible Lego bricks out of the molds. They should come out pretty easily. If they are hard to remove, or the bricks start to lose shape as you remove them, put them back in the fridge for another 10-15 minutes.
- Repeat with additional colors: Repeat this same process with the other colors. Store candy bricks in an airtight container at cool room temperatrure or in the fridge until you’re ready to decorate your cupcakes.

Step 2: Bake cupcakes
You can use any cupcake recipe you want. Pick your favorite from-scratch recipe, or keep things easy and use a box cake mix like I did. I like the funfetti mix, but you can use whatever flavor you and your child prefer. There’s no prize for starting from scratch on this one. Remember, simple is good!
Mix up the batter, bake your cupcakes and let them cool completely while you work on the frosting.
Step 3: Make buttercream frosting
I made a classic white buttercream frosting for the cupcakes. Here’s my super simple recipe:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups (1 lb) powdered sugar
- 2-3 tbsp heavy cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Using an electric mixer, beat the butter for 2-3 minutes (you want to whip some air into it).
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Add the heavy cream (you can use milk in a pinch…your frosting just won’t be quite as silky) and vanilla extract, and beat on high for 3-4 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Adjust the consistency with more cream if necessary. That’s it!

Step 4: Assemble the Lego cupcakes
- Frost the Cupcakes: Once the cupcakes are completely cool, use a piping bag or a spatula to frost each cupcake with the vanilla buttercream. I like using a large star tip to make a simple swirl. If you want more details on how to pipe frosting onto your cupcakes, this tutorial is really helpful.
- Add sprinkles: Sprinkle some colorful…err…sprinkles on top of the cupcake. The ones I used are called “confetti sprinkles”…and I had a really hard time finding them! Sure, I could have settled for any kind of sprinkle, but I get ideas in my head about what something is supposed to look like, and I get grumpy when I can’t find it. I finally found the perfect ones on top of the “funfetti” can of frosting at Target. Go figure!
- Decorate with Edible Lego Bricks: Place the edible Lego bricks on top of the frosted cupcakes, arranging them however you want. I put two bricks of different colors on each cupcake. Simple, but I love how they turned out!

Storing your cupcakes:
Store your cupcakes in an airtight container either in the fridge or at cool room temperature for up to 48 hours before your party. I made mine the day before, put them on a cookie sheet and carefully wrapped them in plastic wrap so they wouldn’t get smushed. They were still delicious the next day, and the colors didn’t bleed from the sprinkles and Lego bricks into the frosting.
There you have it! A step-by-step guide to making the cutest, and totally doable, Lego cupcakes around!
