Welcome to Maycember, everyone! It’s the crazy last month of school that’s filled with field trips, spring sports, end-of-year concerts, and more events on your calendar than you can probably keep track of, let alone attend.
If you’re feeling exhausted just thinking about the month ahead, I see you! And right at the beginning of it all…is teacher appreciation week!
When is Teacher Appreciation Week?
Teacher Appreciation Week in the United States typically occurs during the first full week of May. Usually, it starts on the first Monday of May and continues through the rest of the week. For 2024, it is May 6th to May 10th. However, you might want to double-check which week your school is celebrating its teachers. (That being said, if you show up with a gift and it’s not the official week, I’m pretty sure your child’s teachers would still happily accept the gesture of good will.)
Teacher Appreciation Week WITHOUT the stress!
As a former teacher, I’m a big believer in the importance of celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers work so, SO hard educating our kids, and we all know it’s not a career you go into for the huge paycheck. Teachers pour their hearts into their job, so I love to pour a little gratitude back into them at the end of the school year.
Still, as a parent with a busy schedule, finding the time for grand gestures can be a challenge. The good news? Teachers don’t expect grand gestures! You can show your child’s teacher just how much they mean to you without spending hours on cutesy projects or over-extending your budget.
Here’s my super simple formula for a perfect teacher appreciation gift:

STEP ONE: Have your child write a note to their teacher.
Encourage your child to write a thoughtful note expressing their appreciation for everything their teacher does. It doesn’t have to be long or elaborate, just sincere. They can draw a picture, make a card, or write a letter…whatever they like best!
If you have young kids, this “All About My Teacher” printable interview makes it so easy, and the answers are likely to make their teacher laugh..and maybe even cry (in a good way).
If you have older kids, just give them a piece of paper (cardstock if possible) and give them full ownership of the task. This makes it really low-effort for you and gives your child freedom to get creative!
STEP 2: Write a note of your own to the teacher.
When I was teaching, much of my communication with parents occurred when there was a problem that needed to be addressed. So, it was always really meaningful to have a parent reach out simply to say thanks! Send your child’s teacher an email, or write a quick note telling them something positive you’ve observed during your child’s time in their class.

STEP 3: Add a gift card.
This last step is optional. You certainly don’t have to include a gift card, especially if it doesn’t fit in your family’s budget. I never expected gifts from students, but I always appreciated them.
There are lots of ideas out there for cute crafts and treats, but I promise…what your child’s teacher will find most enjoyable and useful is a gift card. And it’s the simplest thing for me, too. I pick one store (Target and Amazon are safe bets) and buy a gift card for each of my kids’ teachers. It doesn’t have to be a large amount…even $5 or $10 is great!
Just tape it inside the card you’re giving them, and voila…you’re done!

It’s the thought that counts, not the extravagance of the gesture. Teachers understand that parents have busy lives, and they appreciate any effort you make. So, this Teacher Appreciation Week, let’s keep it simple and focus on expressing genuine appreciation for the educators who make a difference in our children’s lives every day.
