But don’t worry. It doesn’t take a lot to get kids going. Often, a simple invitation to play is the key to hours of contented outdoor play. This sidewalk chalk flower garden is exactly the kind of activity that can help jumpstart your kids’ creativity. It makes a great springtime tradition or an impromptu after-school activity.
The best part? It’s as simple as drawing a few stems on the sidewalk and letting your kids take it from there!

How to Set It Up:
1. Start with Stems
Using green chalk, draw several stems with leaves spaced out across a stretch of sidewalk. Vary the height and number of leaves to make it more interesting.

Tell your kids they get to create their very own flower garden! Provide them with several different chalk colors and encourage them to add any kind of flower to each stem—tulips, daisies, sunflowers, or even imaginary blooms. My son and I started out drawing “real” flowers and ended up inventing some of our own as our garden got more and more full.
