Let’s get one thing clear from the start: I am not usually a fancy, cutesy valentine giver. In fact, in nine years of motherhood, I have NEVER made homemade valentines. I am usually perfectly content to buy a box at the grocery store and keep things super simple. Maybe I buy a bag of lollipops if I’m feeling really ambitious. Maybe.
So if you’re in that phase of motherhood right now, that’s totally okay. You don’t need to do fancy. Feel free to skip this post and add valentines to your grocery shopping list instead.
But if, like me, you’re feeling inspired to do something a little special this year, I’ve got a fun (and still really simple) idea to share with you today!
There’s something about the combination of having my youngest child home alone with me most days, his love of playdough, and the fact that his preschool class only has ten students that got me excited about creating a fun gift for those cute kids!
Plus, I couldn’t resist the fun of coming up with puns playing on the word “doh”. There are so many options!
My little guy helped me pick out the Play Doh at the store, put it in bags, hole punch the tags, and write his name on each of them. It was a great project for us to work on together, and it gave him plenty of time to chatter to me about all the thoughts in his head as we worked. He can’t wait to give them to all his friends!
So, if you haven’t already nailed down your valentine plans for your kiddos, these printable Play Doh valentines are a fun option that’s sure to be a hit!
Alright, on to the logistics…
What size Play Doh container works with these valentines?
You can use ANY size Play Doh container with these tags. Originally I was going to design rectangle cards where a small, party-size container would be taped right on top, but the proportions didn’t end up working the way I wanted.
So instead I decided to make gift tags that are meant to be tied to a little cellophane bag. That way I didn’t have to worry about buying the “right” size container…and you don’t either! Because, really, who has time to measure Play Doh containers?
And if you don’t have gift bags either, no problem! Just loop some string through the hole in the tag and tape it to the Play Doh instead. Simple!
You can buy individual containers at many stores (Target, Walmart, etc.) and let your child pick his or her favorites, or just get the “all red” play doh pack to go all in on the Valentine’s theme.

About the printable Play Doh valentines:
- There are 4 different designs to choose from, with 8 tags total per page. Lots of options!
- I designed the shape of the tags with only straight lines specifically to make them easier to cut out for little hands (and for parents, too!)
- You’ll want to print them on cardstock if possible to make them sturdier.
