Thanksgiving season always get me thinking about all the things I’m grateful for. Which is good, since that is kind of the whole idea of the holiday, right? But beyond my own gratitude, I also want my kids to see just how much our family has to be thankful for—and my favorite way to teach them is through play!

So I created a Gratitude Scavenger Hunt! If you’ve been around here for long, you know my love of scavenger hunts runs deep! This one is a fun, hands-on activity that will help your kids explore the many things worth appreciating in their everyday lives. It’s perfect for Thanksgiving season!

Why a Gratitude Scavenger Hunt?

Kids are naturally curious, and they love to explore. When we turn something into a game, they become even more interested—and a gratitude scavenger hunt does just that. By encouraging children to hunt for things they’re thankful for, they begin to understand that “gratitude” isn’t just for big, grand things; it’s about noticing and appreciating the everyday joys all around them.

How to Set Up a Gratitude Scavenger Hunt

This activity can be done indoors or outdoors, making it great for any day! It would be an especially great way to get out some energy on Thanksgiving Day before (or after) your Thanksgiving feast.

To get started, you’ll need:

  • A printed scavenger hunt list (grab my free printable below!)
  • A pencil or crayon for each child
  • Optional: a small prize or treat at the end to celebrate their hard work

Free Printable Scavenger Hunt List

I’ve created a simple, no-prep (yay!) scavenger hunt list you can print at home. This list includes prompts like “something that makes you laugh” and “something that makes you feel cozy,” encouraging kids to notice all the different senses and emotions tied to gratitude.

Scavenger Hunt Prompts

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the prompts you’ll find on the list:

  • Find something that makes you laugh
  • Find something that you enjoy eating
  • Find something that makes you feel cozy
  • Find something you enjoy doing with your family
  • Find something that reminds you of a happy memory

Two Ways to Play

This activity is flexible and can be tailored to your family’s preferences or the age of your kids. Here are two different ways to play:

Option 1: Bingo-Style Hunt

Print out the scavenger hunt sheet that has a bingo-like grid. Each box contains a different prompt. Encourage kids to explore and find something that meets the requirements for each box, marking it off as they go. The goal is to complete the grid, but the real fun is in discovering all the things they’re grateful for!

Option 2: Pick-a-Prompt Game

Print the list of prompts and cut them into strips. Fold each strip and place them in a bowl or basket. One person picks a strip, reads the prompt aloud, and everyone searches for an item that matches. Once everyone has found something, share and discuss your discoveries. Then, let the next person pick a new strip and repeat until all the prompts have been used.

Both methods encourage gratitude in a playful way, and you can choose whichever works best for your group!

5 Tips for Making It a Memorable Experience

  1. Do it Together
When we did this activity, I joined in! We shared our findings and swapped stories about why each thing brought us joy. It was fun to hear my kids’ perspectives, and they loved hearing mine.
  2. Add a “Why”
Encourage your child to explain why they chose each item. This helps deepen their understanding of gratitude and allows you to get a glimpse into their sweet thoughts.
  3. Capture the Moment
Take pictures along the way or of the final “gratitude collection” your child finds. It’s a fun way to document the things that matter to your child at a particular age, and if you make this a yearly tradition, it would be fun to compare from year to year!
  4. End with a Family Discussion
Once the hunt is over, sit down together and talk about the things you found. You can ask questions like, “What’s something you found today that you’re especially grateful for?” It’s a great way to reflect on the activity as a family.

The Takeaway: A Heart Full of Gratitude

This scavenger hunt is such a simple activity, but it’s also a powerful way to teach kids the value of gratitude. When they learn to appreciate the small joys in life, they’ll grow up knowing that happiness doesn’t come from “stuff,” but from recognizing the beauty in what they already have. Plus, it’s such a fun, easy, and low-cost activity that the whole family can enjoy together.

So grab your free printable, gather up the kids, and get ready to uncover all the hidden joys in your lives. With each discovery, you’ll be building a foundation of gratitude that will benefit your kids (and maybe even you!) for years to come.

Happy hunting!
