Seed Exploration for Kids: A Simple Spring Science Activity
Celebrate Earth Day with this seed exploration game for kids! It’s a simple hands-on spring science activity that encourages observation, prediction, and curiosity about how plants grow.

Spring is here! My redbud tree is in full bloom, and my empty garden boxes are begging me to clean them out and get busy planting. Are you growing a garden this year, too? Before you plop those seeds in the ground, try this fun spring science activity!
Spring is the perfect time to dig into nature with your kids and explore the magic of how things grow! Seeds really are magical, don’t you think? The fact that you can put this tiny thing in the ground, cover it with dirt, add a little water and watch as it grows into a full-grown plant is astounding!
Whether you’re prepping for Earth Day or just looking for a fun way to enjoy the warmer weather of spring, this seed exploration activity is a simple, low-prep way to get kids curious about how things grow. With just a few seed packets and a tray, kids can become little scientists, making observations and predictions about seeds that grow the food we eat!

Exploring Seeds: A Spring Science Activity
Materials Needed:
- 4–6 different types of seeds (try sunflower, bean, radish, carrot, etc.)
- Matching seed packets (or printed pictures of the plants)
- A tray, muffin tin, or paper plate divided into sections
- Magnifying glass (optional, but adds excitement!)
Instructions:
- Prep Your Seed Tray:
Place a small handful of each type of seed into a separate section of your tray. I used a dollar store snack tray that I’ve had for almost a decade, but you can use whatever you have on hand, even a paper plate with lines drawn to divide it (draw dividing lines like a pizza or pie). Note: Keep the seed packets out of view to preserve the mystery! - Observe and Explore:
Invite your kids to carefully observe each seed. What do they notice? Encourage them to look at the shape, size, color, and texture. A magnifying glass can help them see fun details they might otherwise miss. - Make Predictions:
Have your kids guess what they think each seed will grow into. Which one looks like it might grow a sunflower? A carrot? Let them explain their reasoning. You can write down their guesses, or have them try to match the seed packets to the correct seed (without looking inside). With my preschooler, I did the packet matching version. For older kids, you could keep the packets hidden so they don’t know what the options are and have them write out their guesses. - Reveal the Answers:
Once everyone has made their predictions, reveal the correct answers one by one, placing the seed packets by their matching seeds on the tray. Celebrate any correct guesses and talk about the tricky ones! - Reflect and Discuss:
Ask open-ended questions like:- What clues helped you make your guesses?
- Which seeds were surprising?
- Why do seeds look different from each other?
- Are there any seeds that looked similar? Why do you think that might be?
Keep the Fun & Learning Going:
Once you’re done guessing the seeds, try one of the following activities to continue exploring together!
- Plant a Mini Garden
Choose a few seeds and plant them in a pot or garden bed. Water them regularly and watch them grow! You could even make it a science experiment by tracking their growth in a journal. Extend the learning with books like The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons, or A Seed is Sleepy by Diana Aston. - Build Your Own Plant Diagram with Food
Invite kids to build their own “I Can Eat a Whole Plant” diagram showing the different parts of a plant that we can eat! - Play a Matching Game
Have your kids create cards with pictures of the seeds and the mature plants and play a memory game.
