Film Canister Rockets: A Super Simple Science Activity for Kids
Make film canister rockets with kids using water and Alka-Seltzer! This fun, easy science experiment is perfect for parties, classrooms, or a summer STEM activity.

A few weeks ago my middle son turned eleven, and he asked for a rocket-themed birthday party. He is my builder/engineer-minded child, so this seemed right up his alley, BUT all the rocket birthday party ideas I found online were for toddlers. Cartoon elephants blasting off into space are adorable, but not exactly the vibe we were going for for my tween.
After a little more research and creative brainstorming though, we came up with a great plan for a super simple, budget-friendly party.

This easy science experiment was such a hit with the kids (and the adults too!) that I knew I had to share it. It’s the perfect easy science activity for a summer afternoon, school science lesson, summer camp, or even a school STEM night.
What Are Film Canister Rockets?
Film canister rockets are a simple and kid-friendly science experiment where a chemical reaction creates enough gas to launch a small container into the air. All you need is a film canister, water, and a fizzy tablet like Alka-Seltzer.
The reaction between the water and the tablet produces carbon dioxide gas, building up pressure until the lid pops off, which sends the canister flying like a tiny rocket!
It’s the perfect hands-on way to explore concepts like chemical reactions, gas pressure, and Newton’s Third Law (for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction).

How to Make Film Canister Rockets
Materials Needed
- Plastic film canisters with tight-fitting lids (these are the ones we bought, and they work great!)
- Fizzy tablets (Alka-Seltzer or generic brand)
- Water
- Safety goggles (optional but a good idea)
- Outdoor space
Instructions
1. Set Up Your Launch Area
This experiment works best outdoors in an open area like a driveway, sidewalk, or playground. (We used a large concrete slab in our backyard.) Place the canister on a flat surface with plenty of space around it.
2. Add Water
Fill the film canister about one-third full with water.
3. Drop in the Fizzy Tablet
Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet in half (or use a whole one for an even bigger reaction).
4. Cap It Quickly and Flip
Snap the lid on tightly and place the canister lid side down on the ground. Step back quickly!
5. Countdown and Launch!
Within 5–10 seconds, pressure will build inside the canister, and the “rocket” will POP off the ground into the air! Repeat as many times as you like—just be sure to wait for each canister to settle before relaunching.
Tips for Success
- Use the right canisters – Tight-fitting lids are key. These are the ones we bought. They’re inexpensive, and they work great.
- Don’t overfill – Too much water can dampen the reaction. Stick to 1/3 full.
- Put the lid on tight – Otherwise the pressure won’t build and your rocket won’t fly high.
- Be patient – Some launches take up to 20 seconds to build enough pressure.
Extension Ideas for Curious Kids
- Experiment with variables – Try different amounts of water, tablet sizes, or even warm vs. cold water. Which makes the rocket fly highest?
- Make it a STEM challenge – Have kids design fins or add weight to their rockets to see how it changes the flight.
- Decorate your rocket – Feeling artsy? Have kids decorate their rockets with markers, stickers, or paper to personalize them. Just be aware that the water in the canisters will disintegrate any paper decorations over time.
Safety Notes
- Always launch rockets outdoors. (They really do go high, like 20+ feet in the air!)
- Stand back once the canister is flipped over. If you have multiple kids launching rockets simultaneously, remind them to be aware of their surroundings and to stand clear of rockets that are about to blast off.
- Wear safety goggles if doing this in a group setting (especially with younger kids). We didn’t have any issues, but it’s a good way to be extra safe. Plus, wearing goggles makes kids feel like REAL scientists. (We bought these goggles for my son’s science birthday party a few years ago, and they have been great!) Don’t have goggles? Wear sunglasses!
