Are your kids planning to hand out valentines to their classmates or friends this year? Every year, my boys look forward to the tradition of picking out cards and getting them ready to take to school on Valentine’s Day. Some years we keep things simple and buy them for the store (totally acceptable if you want to go that route), but other years we get inspired to be a little more crafty.
A funny story about how these valentines came to be…
Last year, my first grader really wanted to give all his friends gemstones for Valentine’s Day. He got the idea from a picture online, and I found a cute set of cards that came with little heart-shaped crystals, too. Easy peasy! Or so I thought.
When the cards arrived, we put them all together, and my son excitedly showed his dad what we had done. My husband started to ooh and ahh over them, and then stopped suddenly and got a confused look on his face.
“What?” I asked.
Looking apologetic, he responded, “Did you realize that the cards have a typo?”
“What?! No way!” I exclaimed. I grabbed one of the cards and examined it. Sure enough (and I truly don’t know how I didn’t notice it the whole time we were assembling them), the cards said in big, red letters:
“Happy Valente’s Day!”
I could. not. believe it. This is why we proofread, people!
Thankfully we were able to return them, but my son still REALLY wanted to give out heart-shaped gem valentines…and now I couldn’t find anything like what he wanted.
So, we designed our own! He helped me pick the colors and the font, and in the end it actually turned out better than the original design. Plus, on Valentine’s Day he was so proud to give his friends cards that he helped design.
And now we’re sharing them with you, too!
So, if you want a simple and unique option for classroom valentines that is easy to assemble and won’t break the bank, we’ve got you covered. Enjoy!

How to Make Your Own Heart-shaped Gem Valentines
Step 1: Download Your Free Printable Valentine’s Cards for Kids
Getting your free printable gem Valentine’s Day cards is easy! Just click the button below to download and print as many as you need. I designed them to be bright and fun while also being ink-friendly and easy to cut.
Step 2: Cut Out the Cards
Once you’ve printed your valentines, use scissors or a paper cutter to trim along the lines. There are eight cards per page, making it easy to print for a whole classroom!
Step 3: Personalize Them
Have your child write their name on each card and, if they’d like, add a little note for their friends.
Step 4: Add a Gemstone (optional)
You could certainly just hand out the cards alone, but we think they are extra cute with a small gem attached to each one. These are the heart-shaped crystals we bought, and they worked great. Depending on the size of your child’s class, there are different size sets on Amazon to choose from. We attached them with removable glue dots, and it worked perfectly.
Step 5: Hand Them Out!
Now your child is ready to share their valentines with classmates and friends. My son was so excited to take these to school on Valentine’s Day, and he said they were a hit with his class, too!
