Halloween Paper Weaving Craft for Kids

The best activities are the ones that are inexpensive, no prep, and simple! This Halloween weaving activity checks all the boxes! Plus, the end result is so cute…and it’s a fabulous way for kids to practice fine motor skills.

With just a few supplies and some classic orange-and-black paper, you’ll have a fun Halloween decoration in no time. Once you’re done, you can turn your finished weaving into something spooktacular—think placemats for your Halloween dinner table or wall art to spookify your space! There are sooo many possibilities with this one.

Halloween Paper Weaving Activity

Materials You’ll Need:

• Orange and black construction paper (or any Halloween colors you like!)
• Scissors (or paper cutter)
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Tape or glue (optional)
• Extra paper for additional decorations (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Paper “Loom”

• Start by folding your black piece of paper in half (hamburger style).
• Using a ruler and pencil, draw evenly spaced lines about 1 inch apart from the folded edge across the page to the other side. Stop about an inch from the edge.
• Carefully cut along each line to create slits, but don’t cut all the way to the edges—leave that 1-inch border at the side intact!

• Open up your sheet of paper and see the slits you created!

2. Create Your Weaving Strips

• Now, take the sheet of orange construction paper and cut it into strips, each about 1 inch wide. These will be your weaving strips. Make sure your strips are long enough to go across the black paper.

3. Weaving Time!

• Starting at the top, take an orange strip and weave it over and under the black slits. For the first strip, weave over the first slit, under the second, and so on.
• For the next black strip, alternate by weaving under the first slit and over the second.
• Continue this pattern with the rest of the strips until your orange paper is filled with a spooky orange-and-black checkerboard!

4. Secure the Ends (Optional)

• If you’d like your weaving to stay more secure, you can tape or glue down the ends of each orange strip on the back of the black paper to prevent them from slipping out.
• Or, you can laminate the whole woven mat and use it as a placemat! This makes a great backdrop for eating Halloween meals, or for playing with my favorite playdough recipe!

5. Add Some Halloween Fun! (Optional)

• To really bring the Halloween spirit to your craft, feel free to decorate your woven mat with Halloween stickers or other spooky paper cut outs. Let the kids get creative, and have fun!

Once you’ve finished your weaving, there are so many fun ways to use it! Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

• Wall Art: Frame your child’s Halloween weaving and display it as a unique piece of spooky art. It’s a great way to showcase their hard work and creativity. Try cutting out a ghost, bat or pumpkin shape from another piece of paper to layer on top for a cool silhouette effect.
• Cut-Out Decorations: Get creative and cut out shapes from the weaving itself—like bats, pumpkins, or witches’ hats—and use them to decorate your home. You could even string several together to make a garland!
