Are you looking for a no-prep Halloween activity a little more creative than another coloring page? This Halloween Spiderweb Zentangle Coloring Page gives kids a chance to get creative, experiment with patterns, and turn a simple spiderweb into a really beautiful piece of art.

Best of all, it’s a project that can work for kids of all ages. Younger artists can simply color in the different sections of the web, or play with simple patterns. Older kids and more advanced artists can get really fancy with detailed designs that are fun to do and create an impressive finished art piece.

There’s no wrong way to do it!

What is Zentangle?

Zentangle is a fun art technique where you create repeating patterns inside a defined space. Instead of simply coloring the spiderweb, kids get to fill it with their own combination of lines, shapes, dots, swirls, and other patterns.

The printable includes several example patterns to get kids started, but they can also make up their own. In fact, encourage them to do exactly that!

It’s a great activity for kids who love to draw, as well as kids who think they “aren’t artists.” It gives a good balance of structured inspiration, but also has plenty of freedom to create your own patterns.

Materials Needed

  • Free Halloween Spiderweb Zentangle Coloring Page (download below)
  • Pens, pencils, or markers
  • A little creativity!

You can use ANY pens or pencils you already have at home for this activity. Seriously. Don’t feel like you need to buy special art supplies.

That said, if you’re looking for a favorite, our go-to art pens for projects like this are black Flair pens. They make nice, clean lines and are especially fun for creating all those little patterns. But regular pencils, colored pencils, gel pens, fine-tip markers, or whatever you have in your drawer will work just fine!

How to Make Your Zentangle Spiderweb

1. Print the spiderweb

Download the free printable and print it on regular printer paper or cardstock.

2. Choose some patterns

Look at the example patterns on the page and choose a few that you like. You can repeat the same pattern throughout the web or use something different in each section.

3. Fill the web

Start adding your patterns to the spiderweb. Try dots, stripes, swirls, zigzags, geometric shapes, or invent something completely new!

Don’t think too hard about it. This is an art project that it meant to be playful and exploratory. Just have fun with it, and you’ll likely be amazed by what you end up with!

4. Add some color (optional)

Once the web is filled with patterns, grab some colored pencils, crayons, or markers and add color if you want to.

Or leave it black and white for a completely different look!

More Halloween Zentangle Ideas

Want to turn this into a little bit more of a challenge for older kids? Try one of these:

  • Pattern challenge: See how many different patterns you can fit into the spiderweb. Can you make each section a different pattern?
  • Create your own: Make up three completely new patterns.
  • Black and white: Use only a black pen and see how interesting you can make the web without adding color.
  • Halloween theme: Create patterns inspired by Halloween, like tiny pumpkins, bats, ghosts, candy corn, or spider legs.

I especially love this activity for kids who enjoy drawing but sometimes get stuck on what to draw. Having the spiderweb as a starting point gives them some structure while still leaving plenty of room for creativity.
