If you’re looking for an easy, no-prep activity that gets kids outside and sneaks in some learning, you need to try this game! Sidewalk chalk alphabet doodles are a simple idea that came to me one sunny afternoon as I was sitting on the driveway watching my kids play with sidewalk chalk.

We already love playing the paper-based “doodle game” where one person draws a squiggle, and the other turns it into a picture. Have you played it, too? So I thought, why not take that classic idea outside, make it bigger, and add in a little alphabet practice?

Why not, indeed! I spent the next half hour drawing letters while my kids happily transformed them into all kinds of creative pictures. It was a great way to keep my kids occupied, get everyone some fresh air, and work on our alphabet skills.

It’s perfect for preschoolers just learning their ABCs, but you can add layers of difficulty for older kids, so kids of various ages can enjoy playing together. My second- and fifth-grade boys loved it!

What We’re Learning

I love simple, no-prep activities that pack in tons of awesome learning all while sitting in the sunshine playing with your kids. Here’s what kids are learning in this activity:

  • Letter recognition – identifying and interacting with individual letters
  • Phonemic awareness – connecting letters to beginning sounds
  • Creativity and imagination – transforming letters into pictures
  • Fine motor skills – drawing and controlling chalk movements
  • Vocabulary development – naming and discussing their creations

Who knew sidewalk chalk could be so educational?!

Materials Needed

You don’t need much for this activity. That’s one of the things that makes it so great! All you need is…

How to Play:

  1. Head outside. Find a flat surface like a driveway or sidewalk.
  2. Draw the letters. Write several letters of the alphabet on the ground. You can focus on just a few or spread out the whole alphabet depending on your child’s age and attention span.
  3. Invite your child to turn the letters into something! Encourage your child to turn each letter into a picture.
    • A “B” might become a butterfly
    • An “S” could turn into a snake
    • “O” might become a donut or a face
  4. Talk about their creations. This is where a lot of the learning magic happens. Ask questions like:
    • “What did you turn your letter into?”
    • “What sound does that letter make?”
    • “Can you think of another word that starts with that letter?”
  5. Keep it playful. Don’t push too hard into the “educational activity” realm. Follow your child’s lead and just have fun creating and exploring letters together.

Variations to Keep the Fun Going

  1. Beginning Sound Challenge: To level up this activity, have kids draw something that starts with that letter. For example:
    • B = butterfly
    • T = tree
    • C = cat
  2. Alphabet Hunt: Add a search-and-find race element to the activity by calling out a letter and having your child run to it and draw something before moving to the next one.
  3. Practice Teamwork: Work together on one letter and take turns adding details to turn it into something fun. For young kids, it might be especially helpful to start out working on a letter together. Then, once they get the idea, encourage them to try one on their own!
  4. Mystery Guessing Game: After you and your child each draw a picture, take turns trying to guess what each of you turned the letter into!
